Custom Blend Glass Pool Tiles for The Langham Melbourne

Trusted to Deliver a Bespoke Luxury Pool Finish

When one of Melbourne’s most prestigious five-star hotels required a unique swimming pool finish, Direct Pool Tiles was trusted to supply a custom-blended glass mosaic solution designed specifically for the project.

The indoor pool at The Langham Melbourne demanded more than a standard off-the-shelf pool tile. The design brief called for a luxurious blend of colours capable of creating depth, movement and visual interest while complementing the sophisticated architecture of the hotel.

The result was a custom glass mosaic blend that continues to create a stunning visual effect for guests enjoying one of Melbourne’s most iconic luxury hotels.

A Custom Blend Designed for Luxury

Unlike standard pool tile collections, this project utilised a carefully selected blend of multiple glass mosaic colours to create a unique water effect.

The combination of deep blues, aquas, turquoise tones and reflective highlights was specifically chosen to enhance the appearance of the water and create a rich, vibrant finish under varying lighting conditions.

As natural light enters through the impressive glass atrium above, the custom blend creates subtle colour changes and reflections throughout the day, giving the pool a constantly evolving appearance.

Why Custom-Blended Pool Tiles?

Custom blend pool tiles allow designers, architects and hotel operators to achieve a completely unique result.

Benefits include:

  • Custom water colour effects
  • Greater depth and visual texture
  • Enhanced light reflection
  • Unique designer appearance
  • Luxury resort-style aesthetics
  • Exclusivity not available with standard tile ranges

By combining multiple shades within a single mosaic blend, the finished pool achieves a more natural and dynamic appearance compared to single-colour installations.

Premium Glass Mosaic Technology

The Langham Melbourne project utilised premium glass mosaics selected for their durability, colour consistency and ability to perform in a commercial aquatic environment.

Glass mosaics remain one of the preferred finishes for luxury hotels due to their:

  • Exceptional colour depth
  • Long-term durability
  • Low water absorption
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Superior reflective qualities

These characteristics make glass mosaics ideal for both commercial and high-end residential swimming pools.

Bringing Resort Luxury to Residential Pools

Chadstone Hotel Melbourne – Custom Glass Mosaic Feature Wall

About This Project

This stunning custom glass mosaic feature wall was created for a luxury five-star hotel at Chadstone, Melbourne. The artwork demonstrates how a simple photograph can be transformed into a timeless architectural feature using thousands of individually placed glass mosaic tiles.

Traditionally, bespoke mosaics of this scale were manufactured in Europe. Recognising a gap in the Australian market, Caprici developed its own custom mosaic production system more than eight years ago, allowing designers, architects and developers to create highly personalised feature walls using premium glass mosaics with significantly shorter lead times.

This particular artwork consists of 77 mosaic sheets measuring 318mm x 318mm, with each sheet containing 841 individual glass mosaic tiles. In total, the completed installation comprises an extraordinary 64,757 individual glass tiles across 11 carefully selected colours.

The design process begins with specialised software that scans and converts a photograph into a detailed mosaic map. This digital template establishes the outlines, shading and colour distribution throughout the artwork. A colour designer then selects the most suitable glass mosaic colours and creates a simulation of the finished piece before production begins.

Once approved, every tile position is mapped and coded. Skilled artisans then place each individual glass tile by hand using a production template, ensuring accuracy throughout the artwork. Each completed sheet is numbered and supplied with a detailed installation plan, allowing the final image to be assembled on-site with precision.

The result is a sophisticated mosaic artwork that combines modern technology with traditional craftsmanship, creating a feature wall that becomes a focal point of the space while maintaining the luxury aesthetic expected within a world-class hotel environment.

In addition to portrait-style artworks, we have produced numerous bespoke floral designs, abstract feature walls and custom commercial installations for hotels, luxury residences and major architectural projects throughout Australia.

Project Highlights

✔ Luxury five-star hotel installation – Chadstone, Melbourne
✔ Custom artwork created from an original photograph
✔ 64,757 individually placed glass mosaic tiles
✔ 77 mosaic sheets measuring 318mm x 318mm
✔ 11 custom-selected glass mosaic colours
✔ Australian-made bespoke mosaic production
✔ Hand-assembled by skilled artisans
✔ Complete installation mapping system provided
✔ Suitable for hotels, luxury residences and commercial projects

This project highlights the versatility of custom glass mosaics and demonstrates how photographs, artwork and bespoke concepts can be transformed into permanent architectural features that deliver exceptional visual impact.

One of Australia’s Largest Custom Mosaic Artworks: The Victorian Government Big Build Mosaic Wall

Stretching for almost one kilometre, this extraordinary custom mosaic installation created for the Victorian Government’s Big Build program stands as one of Australia’s most ambitious public mosaic artworks. Delivered as part of a major infrastructure project undertaken by John Holland, the installation transforms a functional project boundary into a landmark piece of public art, demonstrating how design, typography, engineering and craftsmanship can combine on an unprecedented scale.

The project features a series of oversized typographic statements and numerical references rendered entirely in glass mosaic. Visible from considerable distances, the artwork creates a powerful visual experience for pedestrians, commuters and local residents, while celebrating storytelling through typography on a monumental scale.

A Unique Collaboration of Art, Typography and Infrastructure

The design was created by renowned Australian typographer and educator Dr Stephen Banham, often described as a “typographic evangelist”. Banham’s work explores the cultural significance of letterforms and language, and his contribution to this project elevates typography from the printed page to the built environment.

With a career spanning more than 18 published books and international recognition across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australasia, Banham is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading voices in typography. As a lecturer within the RMIT School of Design and a board member of the International Society of Typographic Designers, his work consistently challenges conventional perceptions of how text can inhabit public space.

For the Big Build mosaic wall, Banham’s carefully crafted typographic compositions were translated into a highly detailed mosaic format, ensuring every letterform, numeral and proportion remained faithful to the original design intent.

Turning Complex Typography into Mosaic

Unlike traditional decorative mosaics, this project required the precise reproduction of typography at an immense scale. Every character, number and spacing relationship had to be accurately translated into thousands of individual glass tiles.

The challenge was not simply artistic—it was highly technical.

Custom mosaic mapping technology was used to convert the original artwork into production-ready layouts. Every tile position was digitally mapped, colour-coded and assigned to installation templates. This process ensured the typography remained crisp and legible when viewed across hundreds of metres.

Maintaining consistent line weights, spacing and alignment over such an extended distance required extraordinary precision from both designers and mosaic artisans.

Handcrafted at Monumental Scale

While advanced software was used to create the production maps, the artwork itself was assembled by hand.

Thousands upon thousands of individual glass mosaic pieces were carefully placed to create the final installation. Each panel was manufactured to exact specifications before being transported and installed on site.

The result is a mosaic wall that combines the permanence and durability of traditional glass mosaic with the visual impact of contemporary graphic design.

The extensive length of the installation means viewers experience the artwork sequentially, revealing different stories, numbers and typographic compositions as they move through the space. This creates a dynamic interaction between the artwork, the infrastructure and the surrounding landscape.

Public Art on an Unprecedented Scale

Infrastructure projects are often judged solely on their engineering achievements, yet this installation demonstrates how public investment can also enrich the cultural and visual identity of a place.

The nearly one-kilometre-long mosaic transforms what could have been an ordinary project boundary into a destination piece of public art. Its scale places it among Australia’s most significant mosaic installations and potentially one of the longest continuous typographic mosaic artworks ever constructed in the country.

The project highlights the growing role of integrated public art within major infrastructure developments, where artistic excellence becomes part of the community experience rather than an afterthought.

A Lasting Legacy

Beyond its impressive dimensions, the Victorian Government Big Build mosaic wall represents a remarkable achievement in design, manufacturing and installation. It showcases what is possible when innovative mosaic production techniques meet world-class typography and public infrastructure.

The result is a visually striking, highly durable artwork that will continue to engage and inspire for decades to come—an enduring example of how art, language and architecture can come together at truly monumental scale.

Project Highlights

  • Nearly 1 kilometre of custom mosaic artwork.
  • Created for the Victorian Government Big Build program.
  • Delivered as part of a John Holland infrastructure project.
  • Designed by internationally recognised typographer Dr Stephen Banham.
  • Features large-scale typographic storytelling and data visualisation.
  • Manufactured using precision mosaic mapping technology.
  • Hand-assembled from thousands of individual glass mosaic tiles.
  • One of Australia’s most significant and potentially longest typographic mosaic installations.
